JESSIE HORNING, ANI VOLKAN, SHEILA STORY & PAT VENO

MAY 3 - 31, 2019

JESSIE HORNING references a photograph from her childhood to engage with experiences of memory and nostalgia prompted by the examination of the image. The print is a picture of her perception of how memory might function or how it can be represented. The surface of the print is like a collage, similar to how memories are combinations of disparate information from different parts of the brain. The ghost marks bring moments of clarity while the overlapping areas of ink create obscurity, which is comparable to the fragmented, shifting nature of memory.

CHARNO GALLERY – ANI VOLKAN weaves history and heritage, where fragments of cloth with printed imagery reference the act of storytelling. While her work is driven by personal motivations, it speaks to our universal desire for a connection with our past, and a need to understand our history. Volkan is drawn to Armenian folktales to further her own story as folklore speaks to our shared cultures, customs, and past.Volkan uses the stitch as line to draw ideas together and create a literal and metaphorical map among the work. Sewing is an integral part of creation because it combines the past work of her family with their current practices.

UNDERGROUND GALLERY – SHEILA STORY loves to get lost. Exploring parks, gardens, sanctuaries, gravel roads, wild areas and curious urban infrastructure, Story intentionally loses herself in observation, enabling recovery of equilibrium lost to the demands and complexities of 21st Century life. Her paintings document a moment of wonder sparked when a composition reveals itself through an interplay of light, shadow and color inhabiting abstract geometric forms in the physical world.

UNDERGROUND GALLERY – PAT VENO sees lines and colors that she loves. That is the shapes of lines formed by a bended arm or trees against the sky – she loves the interplay of colors. A painting or doodle is about the emotion the image Veno saw or think about invokes. Her images are a result of all she has been, done, seen, read, dreamt or felt.
