Forum is a bi-monthly print magazine elevating the critical study and encouragement of the arts in the Greater Kansas City region.

Forum publishes critical art reviews, photographic essays of art and exhibitions, personal essays, poetry, artist profiles, interviews, and a readers’ forum.

Previously published from 1975 to 2001, Forum has a rich history of facilitating critical conversations in service to our region's visual art, conceptual art, and literary communities. The Kansas City Artists Coalition is excited to revive this publication and amplify new voices as Forum relaunches with the first new issue in 23 years.

Recent issues of Forum will be available in our online archive two months after the publication date.

PITCHES, SUBMISSIONS, AND LETTERS

We are currently accepting pitches for our February issue.

  • Forum seeks writing that expands, interrogates, enlightens, and enriches the visual and literary arts community in our region. To contribute an article, interview, profile, or exhibition review to Forum, send a pitch to editor Andrew Johnson at forum@kansascityartistscoalition.org with the subject line “Pitch.” Please include a brief description of what you would like to write, a brief bio, and a writing sample that reflects your best work. We will do our best to respond to pitches within two weeks.

Forum pays contributors for their work. Our standard rates are:

$100 for snap reviews (250-300 words)

$150 for short reviews, brief essays, articles (400-750 words)

$250 for long reviews, features, essays, reported stories (800+ words)

If you want to publish a personal essay or poem in Forum, please stay tuned. We will announce our submission process later in 2024.

  • In every issue of Forum we publish a Readers’ Forum. This is an opportunity for readers to respond and broaden the diverse perspectives offered in our pages. If you have a response to something published in Forum, please email forum@kansascityartistscoalition.org with the subject line “Readers’ Forum.” Readers’ Forum submissions may be edited for clarity and brevity.

  • If you are a curator, artist, gallery representative, artist-run space, or a reading series organizer, we want to know what is on your calendar in the next few months! We will publish a listing of upcoming exhibitions in Forum. Please email your upcoming exhibitions and events to forum@kansascityartistscoalition.org with the subject line “Exhibitions and Events.”

  • Want to help us keep our magazine ad free and accessible to all? Become a sponsor today and support arts and humanities writing in our region!
