Art for New HALO Village

HALO provides the foundation of a family for homeless and at-risk youth in the greater Kansas City area and are currently in the final stage of construction on the HALO Village that includes a Girls Home, Boys Home, and Learning Center that provides life skills programming, therapeutic art, and education services.

We are in the process of securing donations of artwork to fill the walls in these homes and Learning Center with beauty and create a life changing environment for HALO youth to thrive!

For the bedrooms, we are looking for mostly painted canvas, or prints on canvas or wood to keep the spaces safe. In other spaces, we are open to other media and framing. If you have a piece in mind, feel free to complete this Google Form and a HALO team member will reach out and let you know if it would be a good fit.

If you have questions, feel free to reach out to Christina Cummins at christinacummins@haloworldwide.org or call (816) 472-4256 (ext 1002).

Surel's Place AIR

Surel's Place AIR

The residency program at @surelsplace in Garden City, Idaho, is open to professional visual, literary, and performance artists.

Our mission is two-fold: to offer artists the kind of professional support you deserve and to provide the public with interesting, accessible, inclusive, and professional art experiences, including performances, readings, exhibits, and workshops.

OUR COMMUNITY
Surel’s Place believes that artists should be supported at a level commensurate to the value you add to our individual and collective lives.  We aim to give you the time, shelter, and professional support your work deserves.  In exchange, we ask you to offer art experiences to our community. Garden City values artists and their work, and as a resident, you will be valued and appreciated for the energy, ideas, and dedication that you bring to our city.

OUR PROGRAM
The program is open to professional visual, literary, and performance artists:  painters, writers, musicians, architects, filmmakers, and choreographers… any artist who needs a place to focus.  However, because of the property’s limitations and proximity to neighbors, this is not a place that can accommodate loud or terribly messy processes, such as welding or blacksmithing.

We favor artists whose work is technically advanced, unique, attractive (need not be pretty!), and conceptually valuable.  Work that is predominantly conceptual, that must be explained in order to attract a viewer, may not be met with as much enthusiasm by our jurists.  In addition, because we ask our residents to interact with the public through one workshop and one final event, we welcome artists who desire to connect with an audience in these ways.

Additionally, each cycle, one of our five residencies includes outreach to local schools through our PARTNER Schools Program — another way we do our part to serve our community.

RESIDENCY ADMINISTRATION
The non-smoking requirement is non-negotiable. Any evidence of smoking on the property will be grounds for early termination of the residency.

SPOUSES & PARTNERS
Though partners are welcome to join artists, we cannot accommodate children or pets. No more than two adults can live at Surel’s Place during a residency. There may also be a  surcharge to cover additional utility costs. Note that partners who desire concurrent residencies must apply and be accepted separately.

APPLICATION REVIEW PROCESS
Applications are reviewed by juries of accomplished Boise-based artists, writers, and fine arts professionals. All applicants will be notified of decisions via email at the address they provide on the application.

THE PROGRAM INCLUDES:

  • one month residencies (more time may be possible, but must be justified within the application).

  • free rent

  • free utilities

  • free wi-fi

  • modest living stipend of $100 per week

  • $300 travel stipend

  • use of well-maintained bicycles for transportation

  • free or discounted tickets to art events and movies

  • free marketing via our website, Facebook, targeted emails, online public calendars, and press releases

  • free professional event hosting including catering, curating, and logistics.

In addition, residents will have hosts: a host will help orient residents to the community, introduce them to other artists, inform them of nearby events and opportunities, and host their public events at Surel’s Place.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS

  • Maintaining residence at the home and studio (no studio-use only residencies).

  • A focused use of the residency to achieve a stated goal with no other employment/work occurring simultaneously. No other employment during residence.

  • Visual Artists will interact with the public at Surel’s Place for a  show of and/or lecture about their residency work. Writers will offer a reading and discussion session of their residency work.

  • All artists must offer at least one public workshop. (2-3 hours, minimal lecturing)

  • Visual Artists must donate one piece of art to Surel’s Place for future fundraising efforts.

  • Writers must allow Surel’s Place to publish a free-standing excerpt of their residency work in books, broadsides, posters, or other materials in keeping with our mission.

  • The Surel’s Place commission on all sales emanating from your residency is 35% of the retail price.  For ticketed events that are offsite or require contracted services, the commission is 45% and will be calculated after administrative expenses. One caveat for the sales commission: if you are an artist such as a writer who is selling books, a musician who is selling CDs, or an artist who is selling work that qualifies as merchandise or is tangential to their medium, the requested commission for Surel’s Place is 15%.

Grant Program FAQs

Artistic Production

Artistic Production grants fund the production and exhibition of new artistic commissions, in amounts ranging between $25,000 – $100,000. Often exhibited beyond museum walls in public space, these projects feature high levels of thought leadership, artistic production, and public engagement. VIA Art Fund accepts Letters of Inquiry (LOIs) on a semiannual basis for our Fall and Spring award cycles.

Artistic Production LOI Guidelines

Curatorial Fellowship

The VIA Curatorial Fellowship is awarded annually to a contemporary art curator whose past accomplishments attest to, and current aspirations promise, significant contributions to the field. The Fellowship carries a grant award of $25,000 in discretionary funds for professional development, research, and travel, and participation in VIA partner programs. The Curatorial Fellowship is by nomination only. We solicit nominations from colleagues, constituents, and VIA partners.

VIA Art Fund’s Incubator Grant Program has come to a close.

From 2013 to 2018, VIA Art Fund supported the work of emerging arts nonprofits through its Incubator Grant Program. From 2019 to 2023, VIA and Wagner Foundation partnered on a five-year, $1 million VIA | Wagner Incubator Grant Fund, which supported the building of a robust and inclusive national arts ecosystem. The program awarded unrestricted general operating support to twenty-five small-scale nonprofit arts organizations throughout the United States. The five-year VIA | Wagner Incubator Grant program was successfully completed in 2023.

Due to our small staff and the high volume of correspondence we receive, we cannot take general inquiries by phone. For questions not answered in our FAQs, please email grants@viaartfund.org.

Mesa Refuge Writing Residency

Mesa Refuge Writing Residency

Mesa Refuge welcomes a diverse community of writers—both emerging and established—who define and/or offer solutions to the pressing issues of our time. Particularly, it is our priority to support writers, activists and artists whose ideas are “on the edge,” taking on the pressing issues of our time including (but not limited to): nature, environment and climate crisis; economic, racial and gender equity; social justice and restorative justice; immigration; health care access; housing; and more.

We especially want writers of nonfiction books, long-form journalism, audio and documentary film. Occasionally we accept poetry, fiction (Young Adult/Adult Literary), screenwriting and playwriting, photojournalism, personal memoirs (as a vehicle to tell a larger story) and graphic narrative. We tend not to accept academic writing. The potential impact and distribution of your project is also important.

We aim to support a diverse community of writers and welcome applicants that represent a broad spectrum of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, immigration status, religion or ability. Please see our DEI statement for more information about our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

We have one application deadline during the year. The application is available on June 1, 2024 and the deadline is November 1, 2024 for residencies throughout 2025.

As a small nonprofit, our application fee of $50 helps underwrite the cost of application review. However, we do not want the application fee to be a barrier to apply. To request a fee waiver, please email us directly here.

The questions on our application are mostly short answer. We require one writing sample (max 2,000 words or 10 pages), a current resume, headshot photo and two references (we do not require letters of recommendation). Applicants will be contacted approximately 10 weeks after the application deadline.

Our residencies are two weeks long and there is no residency fee. Additional residency expenses like travel, transportation and food are your responsibility. Our facility accommodates three residents at a time.

Although we do not publicize summer residency dates, we often have 1-2 sessions available in the summer. Please note your interest in a summer residency in your application.

When you click the button, below, you will be transferred to our application on Submittable. Our residency application is due November 1, 2024.

Tallgrass Prairie Residency

Tallgrass Prairie Residency

*Please read the full description of requirements and awards for the residency before continuing to the application.*

Program Description: The Tallgrass Artist Residency is a unique program that offers individual artists/artist teams time and space to retreat and research in a rural, tallgrass prairie setting. Though the experience is rural, it is not meant to be isolating. Artists are provided lodging at Matfield Station in the small community of Matfield Green, Kansas — 20 miles from Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and home to a growing number of artists and community builders. Learn more on our website.

Commitments:
 • Residencies are offered in two-week (10 night) periods between April and September. Residency periods must occur in consecutive ten night blocks.
 • Residents are expected to give a public program during this two-week period, and will be asked to contribute documentation of their experience through daily Instagram posts and a post-residency summary of their experience for the website (read Written Reflections on artists’ pages).
 • Residents are also expected to be prepared to participate in a group exhibition and artist symposium in Matfield Green on Saturday, October 4, 2025 (lodging provided)
 • Residents are required to make their own arrangements for transportation to and from the residency. Due to our rural setting, it's essential for visitors to have their own reliable method of transportation.
 • Residents are responsible for their own food, but cooking and eating utensils are available in all rooms.

Awards:
 • Artists will be provided 10 nights of lodging at Matfield Station during residency period.
 • Artists will be connected with staff at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and may be granted special access, upon request.
 • Each artist will receive a $650 stipend from KCAIC for travel and material reimbursement to be awarded after residencies are completed.

• Ecoregion Exchange artists traveling from 700+ miles away receive an extra travel stipend
 • Artists will be provided lodging for up to two nights in or near Matfield Green during closing events in October.
 • Reimbursement funding, within reason, will be available for shipping artwork to and from group exhibition, as needed.

Who Can Apply:  This residency seeks to create connection and conversation across the Great Plains by  cultivating opportunities for artists/artist teams who currently live in a place that is ecologically considered prairie (← click the link to see a general map of this area). However, we also have one dedicated residency period for an artist/artist team outside of the prairie ecoregion, treated as an "ecoregion exchange".

Ideal applicants will have a strong body of work with a unique voice or perspective, a self-driven dedication to learning through place, and an interest in participating in a contemporary dialogue. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and career levels, media and practice. We're not currently accepting applications from previous artists-in-residence in the program or international residents.  **Because of our rural setting, having your own transportation during the residency is essential**

Applications are due by October 31, 2024 at 11:59pm with notification by December 15, 2024.

Untitled Event

The Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency (EMAR) program by Collar Works is designed to provide a diverse group of emerging and established artists an immersive, supportive, productive, and communal atmosphere for art-making and dialogue on a bucolic 77-acre farm in Washington County.

The residency program aims to create opportunities for artists to take risks and develop new work across many art forms, primarily visual and literary arts, while engaging in meaningful dialogue with fellow residents and arts professionals.

Elizabeth Murray believed that each person deserves an opportunity to make their art and for their art to be visible on equal platforms. Our residency program responds to the critical needs of emerging artists and artists as parents, while striving to build a program that reflects the rich cultural environment of today through an active commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
