KATHERINE MOES
Katherine Moes is based in Kansas City, Missouri. She is new to the Midwest, after having spent most of her life in the Pacific Northwest. While a maker and artist for as long as she can remember, she did sidestep into the sciences during college (BSc Biology), only to return to her high school love of clay after having started a family, and completing a Science Illustration Certificate. Six years ago, she committed fully to ceramics, and after her move to the Midwest, has been throwing clay as a member of the Belger Crane Yard studio.
Artist Statement
My greatest inspiration is the natural world. As a life long student of nature both in and out of the classroom, I have been fascinated by the raw beauty of the natural world. I am drawn to tones found near the earth, red sands, stony beaches, and mossy mountains. Exploring soft curves and undulating patterns give me ample space to play with a variety of silhouettes. Within my silhouettes you may see the suggestion of figures, rocks, trees, or fungi. The process of building my pieces brings me to a place of creative flow and deep joy. It is this flow and joy along with my adoration of nature that I hope to evoke in the work I make.
If I'm not working with clay in the studio I'm getting my hands dirty in the garden, taking long walks, or reading about mystics and myths. All of my work is lovingly made in Clay County, Missouri.
