PARKER LEVI - SNAP SPACE

Over the past 2 years PARKER LEVI‘s work at Imagine That has gone from very rigid, almost obsessive, to much more fluid and open. The works we would like to exhibit primarily are Parker’s wrapped pole series. Without the knowledge or meaning to imitate, Parker references outsider artist Judith Scott with repetitious wrapping of yarn, but while Scott’s pieces work to hide trinkets and objects, Parker’s works to highlight an object, to give it new life and show the beauty of what a thing can be. Using ordinary packing tubes, Parker wraps and weaves different colors and textures of yarn to create vibrant pillars. Along with these pillars, we would show some of Parker’s earlier fiber works, metal grids meticulously woven with yarn and tapestries. These pieces help to show the progression from systematic, rigid pattern making, to embracing a practice full of experiment and improvisation. Regardless of the specific practice, loose or rigid, when Parker finds a material that he wants to use, he must entire exhaust that material before calling a piece complete. This exhibit could be a great lens on the practice of self taught or outsider artist, while also speaking to the value in reuse of material, which creates a more sustainable practice overall.
