CHICO SANS

OCTOBER 2 - 30, 2020

CHICO SANS finds great pleasure in studying shadows, both visually and metaphorically. Stretching across time and space, optically distorted silhouettes of objects appear everywhere; evidence of an obstruction of light or perhaps a component of phantasmal hallucinations. According to Carl Jung, the shadow is the primordial component of the psyche, functioning as a deep well for human darkness, thereby fueling the creative energy in an individual and potentially helping to manifest the unrealized self. He believed that “the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being”. For Buehler, creating art is an exercise in illusion. This illusion is a form of entertainment, both for himself and others. The exercise helps keep him aware and open. He conjures up most of his imagery with a stream-of-consciousness approach.
