We are jumping back into the KCAC Artist Lifestyle this week with new KCAC member Daniel Riekena (@danielriekena)!
Daniel is a recent transplant to Kansas City and jumped right into the arts world with KCAC! It has been great fun getting to see his works changing and evolving as he settles more and more into his KC roots and studio. So, we thought you all might enjoy seeing what he is getting into and take a peek into his world.
We are very excited to see what Daniel has in store for us this week, so here are a few words from him about his current work and artistic inspiration…
“I am an art educator. Every artwork I make is intended to help my students create and appreciate art. My artwork either shows the process of creating art or it is a jumping off point to discuss art history. Even when I paint commissioned work I document the process so that I can show classes in the future. I enjoy creating artwork in every medium, but I always find myself most comfortable making oil portraits.
Oil portraits are able to tell the story of the subject in the artwork. The subjects I paint specifically for my classroom tell stories of art history. I usually change the stories a little bit by painting a contemporary actor as though they were painted by a Renaissance portraitist or by painting a modern musician as a French Impressionists would have. Other than being enjoyable projects for me to create, appropriating art historical paintings allows my students to appreciate art from a familiar perspective.”
We just can’t wait to see what Daniel has in store for us, so here are a few images of his artwork and past Instagram photos to get things kicked off…
Be sure to follow Daniel on his KCAC Instagram journey starting tomorrow Thursday, December 28th – Tuesday, January 2nd!
