The KCAC Artist Lifestyle is kicking back up this week with KCAC Member and local painter Rick Wright (@rickwrightart)

Rick graduated from the University of Kansas with a B.F.A in Design/Illustration and an M.A. in art education. He currently lives in midtown Kansas City, Missouri and routinely exhibits work in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. Throughout the year he participates in art festivals in Minneapolis, Denver, Dallas, St Louis, Chicago, Memphis, and Des Moines. In addition to his personal work, he has been an art educator in both private and public schools and currently teaches art at Van-Go Inc., an arts based non-profit job training program in Lawrence, KS.

It has been such a great pleasure to watch Rick’s work grow and evolve over the past several years and when we saw his Instagram page, we saw a perfect fit for the KCAC Artist Lifestyle take over! So to get things started, here are a few words from Rick about his current work and artistic inspiration…

“Terpsichore, in Greek mythology was one the nine Muses of the arts. Her traditional domain of dance and song, along with more contemporary cirque nouveau and burlesque performers have influenced my most recent figurative explorations. Though semi-abstract and expressionistic, I value a believability, proportion, and movement in the form. Within each piece, I challenge myself with color relationships, and mark-making to build, define, redefine, and refine each painting without losing a sense of liveliness and energy. I seek a balance between the raw nature of a gestural five minute sketch and the sophistication one expects of a resolved painting. The strength and grace of these feminine forms in motion both challenge and compliment the direction of my work.”

We just can’t wait to see what Rick has in store for us, so here are a few images of his artwork and past Instagram photos to get things kicked off…

The KCAC Instagram is BACK to chase all your winter blues away with KCAC Member and local artist Joseph Jurkiewicz (@josephjurkiewicz)!

We first got a look at Joseph’s artwork in 2016 while he was interning at KCAC. His hard-work and dedication to his artwork and practice struck us immediately. Upon graduating from KCAI in 2016, he jumped straight into producing a wide range of art, networking with area artists and gaining several group and solo exhibitions along the way. His continued growth in his work and career is incredible and we thought it was time to take a look into his world through the KCAC Instagram lens, so without further ado, away we go!

To get things started, here are a few words from Joseph about his current work and artistic inspiration…

“I am a visual artist involving complex narratives.  My paintings explore themes of solemn, desire, enigmatic and exaltation. Pulling influences from street art and fashion illustration to create perplexing surreal imagery. Using no reference’s to refer too, my imagery comes straight from the depths of my mind. My impulsive nature can be found in the pages of my sketchbooks, where I constantly explore new ideas, mark making and surrounding influences.”

We just can’t wait to see what Joseph has in the works for us, so here are a few images of his artwork and past Instagram photos to get things kicked off…

karen steen

HAPPY NEW YEAR from the KCAC Artist Lifestyle crew! This week we are swinging into 2018 with local artist and KCAC member Karen Steen (@karenannsteen)!

Karen joined the KCAC family several years ago as a new artist to Kansas City. Since moving here, Karen has had a solo exhibition of her works in the KCAC Underground Gallery and participated in numerous group exhibitions both at the Artists Coalition and beyond. Karen’s artwork often explores the natural world through a macro lens and dives deep into the environment we find ourselves immersed in each day. Karen invites her audience to take a close look at the animals and organisms that move throughout our world often unseen by the naked eye. We enjoy her work so much, we thought it was time to share it all with our Instagram crew and you! So, take a seat and lets see what Karen is getting into and take a peek into her art world.

To get things started, here are a few words from Karen about her current work and artistic inspiration…

“My art is a celebration of nature’s web, its diverse life forms and interconnected systems. Humans are tearing at the web, damaging the balance. I draw attention to life that is very small, hidden or invisible, and its infinite detail and interconnectedness. Plants, insects, microscopic life, and animal and human anatomy inspire my drawings and the shapes I incorporate into my collages, wall sculptures and light-boxes.”

We just can’t wait to see what Karen has in the works for us, so here are a few images of her artwork and past Instagram photos to get things kicked off…
