The KCAC Artist Lifestyle project is back with painter Jane Bowness Johannsen (@janebojo). Jane will be sharing a peek into her traveling art world for the next six days!

Jane is yet another talented featured KCAC artist currently exhibiting in the 34th Annual River Market Regional Exhibition: Truth, Trust, Transcend. The show and Jane’s painting are up at KCAC through THIS FRIDAY, September 22nd during gallery hours Wednesday – Saturday from 11 am – 5 pm, so come on down and enjoy Jane’s work and many others!

We are looking forward to what Jane has to share with us, so here are a few words from her about her work and current art practice…

“I am a Steelville, Missouri native. As a young girl growing up in the rural Ozark Mountains, I developed the ability to be a keen observer of my natural surroundings. As an adult, I strive to communicate the introspective connection I gain from my environment into an artful form.

I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Northwest Missouri State University in May of 2010. Since graduation, my husband Trevor and I have traveled to many places and accomplished many arduous adventures. From each of the places and adventures, I have translated the experiences into a painting series.

In order to translate the experiences into paintings, I construct off the emotional connection to the subject. Each series requires time for reflection to create a foundation from which to build a cohesive body of work. Each experience has created an alternative perspective from it’s predecessor; in turn must the paintings.

In March 2017, my husband and I returned from two years living and working in rural southwest Ethiopia. To help digest and understand the experience, I am working toward two different artistic translations. The first translation is a direct documentation of the time and people in Ethiopia; and the second transcribes the emotional experience and how it affects my outlook on life in America.”

We can’t wait to see what Jane has in store for us, so here are a few images of her artwork and past Instagram photos to get things kicked off…

matthew garcia

The KCAC Artist Lifestyle project is rolling along with local printmaker Matthew Garcia (@matthewwilliegarcia). Matthew will be sharing a peek into his art world, his graduate studies and more with for the next six days!

Matthew is ANOTHER amazing featured KCAC artist in the 34th Annual River Market Regional Exhibition: Truth, Trust, Transcend. The show and Matthew’s two prints are up at KCAC through September 22nd during gallery hours Wednesday – Saturday from 11 am – 5 pm, so come on down and enjoy amazing art ASAP!

We are looking forward to what Matthew has to share with us, so here are a few words from him about his work and current art practice…

“We have not become civilized just well organized; we can no longer be distinguished from the beasts that surround us. We work with a pack mentality and destroy the weakest so that the strongest can prevail. We have been wild from the beginning though we walk in human skin. We strive to understand the subtleties of the universe and yet we fail to understand the subtleties of ourselves.

Throughout time we have used the natural world to explain the way of our own, in myth, religion, folklore and science. We personify, dissect, observe and interact with nature to understand a little more about ourselves. We have a natural connection with flora and fauna because we see our own reflection, yet we have made them a commodity.

I am trying to exemplify some of the subtleties of the universe and the connections we cultivate with nature that surrounds us. My work touches on the beauty of life by juxtaposing it with death, the idea that life becomes more beautiful with the realization of our own mortality. I am also striving to create imagery that questions the eternal, the temporal and the present. I utilize space, both the physical negative of the image plane and celestial, to create a tension between the idea of “everything and nothing.” I am trying to force the viewer to question the world around the subject.”

We can’t wait to see what Matthew has coming up, so here are a few images of his artwork and past Instagram photos to get things kicked off…

tj templeton

September is cooling things off this week, but the KCAC Artist Lifestyle project is heating back up with local painter TJ Templeton (@tj_templeton). TJ will be sharing a peek into his art world with all of us for the next six days!

TJ is another featured KCAC artist in the 34th Annual River Market Regional Exhibition: Truth, Trust, Transcend. The show and TJ’s painting are up on display at KCAC through September 22nd during gallery hours Wednesday – Saturday from 11 am – 5 pm, so come on down and enjoy amazing art ASAP!

We are looking forward to what TJ has to share with us, so let’s get this journey kicked off with a few words from TJ about his work and current art practice…

“My work is inspired by the human condition, social justice issues, and the balance of private and public. I tend to blur the line between reserved intimacy and narcissistic exhibitionism – not just in the portrayal of my subject matter, but also in my role as the creator. I rely heavily on the use of the human figure and interior environments to illustrate these concepts. Visually, I work almost exclusively in a realist and figurative aesthetic from direct observation.

I approach each work of art as a specific project with its own formula and solution. As such, my media spans nearly all methods of two-dimensional image making and frequently crosses into three dimensions. This approach to art-making results in a wide variety of techniques and media in my body of work: while some concepts require painting or printmaking, other concepts may require video or performance.”

We are looking forward to see what TJ has in store for us, so here are a few images of his artwork and past Instagram photos to get things kicked off…
